I cannot thrive without structure. That’s one major thing I cannot do. I have tried it in the past and I’ve realised that it’s just impossible for me to achieve.
A brand or a project without the right structure is like having puzzle pieces scattered without a clear picture of what you’re trying to form. Imagine how disastrous that can be.
While you’re trying to put the pieces together into a picture in your mind, someone else on the team is also doing the same—while your manager/boss is also doing the same. But you all will arrive at very different results because there’s no agreed “picture” you’re trying to form with your puzzle.
Everyone is confused, even the customers.
You would have worked very hard, but you’d still have performed poorly—that’s what lack of structure does to a team. And if anything, I hate to work very hard, without a mutually-agreed expected end. I like my reputation, so I only position myself for good work.
If I join a project that is without structure, my first task is always to introduce it. It’s either I control that situation or advise the brand to bring in the right resource to get it done—depending on the depth of the structure needed.
I called it a weakness because there are people who actually can thrive in such chaos, I can’t. But then, on the other hand, my interest in structure has been a blessing to every team I joined—that allowed me to introduce structure.
Structure—every team needs it to thrive. It’s why I like working with Katie, she really brings structure to the team.
